From Chaos to Clarity: The Browser Plugin That Changed My Maritime Investigations
You don’t realize how much time you’re wasting until you stop wasting it.
I am someone who chronically has 100 tabs open, dropping website links and social media references into random documents, and saving all my screenshots to my desktop. People are actually shocked to see my desktop clutter extend across 3 monitors… Every case felt functional but could really use better organization.
I work fast and sometimes that means that when it comes time to assemble a report I can waste time trying to assemble all the leads and things I found along the way.
Thankfully my very smart and I assume much more organized friend Ritu Gill sent me a browser plugin to try. I generally have a love/hate relationship with tools but this is simple and focused solely on capturing and preserving what I see online, structuring it in a way that helps me to answer “where did this piece of data come from?”
Maritime Investigations Move Fast
If you’ve ever investigated anything in real-time tied to vessels, ports, or offshore companies (think Suez Canal disaster, undersea cable cuts, Oligarch yachts), you know how fast digital content changes. Pages get taken down, posts are edited, and links expire. And unfortunately, even if the data is still there, the context around it gets lost… especially if you are revisiting a case weeks or months later!
Forensic OSINT changed how I handle these issues.
Instead of relying on screenshots and notes, I now get a full visual capture of the page, everything expanded, nothing cut off (it will literally scroll the whole page, wild). It’s saved in one file, with hash values and timestamps in case they are needed for any official reasons..
Using Forensic OSINT feels a bit like I can preserve a moment in time and grab all the context that allows me to easily reproduce the content and process in report form.
“You’ll Find It in the Report”
A staple of maritime OSINT is uncovering shell companies and the many many layers of ownership that can quickly become unruly. As a senior analyst it's often hard to train new analysts to capture all the details. I love how Forensic OSINT facilitates the capture of useful data, with the file including a timestamp, metadata, and full scroll that allows junior analysts to feel more confident about having everything contained in the report.
Looking Ahead: Subject Dossier
Another cool thing to keep an eye out for is an upcoming feature Ritu told me about called Subject Dossier. It will help you organize what you find (names, aliases, accounts, connections) as you work and plop them into a living profile. The dossier will update itself as you continue to capture info and allow you to trace everything back to the source. Basically it builds a target package for you!
Try It Yourself
Don’t be lazy like me, without Forensic OSINT I wasted countless hours hunting down info I forgot to collect sources for. This tool will save you time and help your work hold up under scrutiny. So focus on using your big brain to find the leads and let Forensic OSINT do the organizational busy work.
